Amy and I like to think of ourselves as smart, educated people. (Between the two of us, we have four bachelor’s degrees and two master’s degrees!) But the most important course that we ever took, the one that has most transformed our marriage, our family, and our ministries, was never taught in a university or a seminary. It was taught in a Sunday School room.
Financial Peace University (FPU) is not an investing seminar, a get-rich-quick scheme, or a thinly-veiled effort to get people to give more money to the church. It’s a nine-week course that teaches biblical principles for personal financial management.
The concepts in the course are not earth-shattering. In fact, they’re common sense: have a plan and save for emergencies, get and stay out of debt, invest for the future, and give generously. But as we all know, biblical common sense is not very common these days, especially when it comes to messages we receive about our personal finances!
I simply cannot commend this course to you in strong enough terms. FPU is not just for young couples or families with kids. It’s for everybody, for everyone can and should learn biblical principles for handling personal finances. After all, there are more than 800 verses in the Scriptures that deal with money and wealth! Jesus himself taught far more on issues of money, wealth, and power than on any other subject!
Clearly, this subject matters to God, so it must matter to us!
This fall, Ridglea will be offering two concurrent courses, both beginning on Wednesday, September 3, from 7-8:30 p.m., and both meeting weekly. Our own Paul Duncan will be leading a section of FPU. If you have any kind of debt besides a home mortgage, if you do not have a written monthly cash-flow plan (budget), or if you’ve never been through a biblical personal finance course before, this is the course for you.
At the same time, I will be leading a section of the Legacy Journey, the follow-up course to FPU. Using biblical principles, the Legacy Journey teaches people how to manage wealth, invest for the future, and leave a lasting legacy. If you are an FPU “alum,” or if you have no debt besides a home mortgage, this is the course for you.
The format of both courses is simple. Each class will watch a video presentation that is between 45-60 minutes in length. After a short break, the class will reconvene for small-group discussion and case studies out of the course workbook. The real power in both classes comes from these small group discussions. More than once, I’ve seen tears of joy as people begin to develop discipline, hope, and a sense of destiny around their personal finances!
Childcare will be available for both courses with advance reservations. If you have teenagers, I encourage you to bring them with you to class, for the earlier a person learns to live without debt, save for emergencies, and invest for the future, the better!
As the Proverbs remind us, “Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” (Proverbs 22:6-7)
