“A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of this Offering to a local cause. Mid councils retain an additional 25% for ministries of peace and reconciliation. The Presbyterian Mission Agency uses the remaining 50% to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.”
This year, our 25 % goes to SafeHaven, whose mission is: is to end domestic violence through safety, support, prevention and social change.
Sounds a lot like what you can read on the PCUSA website: “The Compassion, Peace and Justice ministry area helps Presbyterians respond to the needs of the world’s most vulnerable people, address injustice in all areas of life, and advocate for peaceful solutions to conflict.”
Certainly women and children living in an abusive situation are among the most vulnerable.
From the SafeHaven website:
“SafeHaven provides 24-hour care at two emergency shelters in Arlington and Fort Worth to families fleeing violent situations. The holistic shelters provide a comprehensive continuum of care for the women and children who would otherwise be forced to remain in dangerous situations. Trained bilingual advocates respond 24 hours a day to victims who call SafeHaven’s toll-free crisis hotline. There is free access to counseling in both English and Spanish for those who are currently experiencing domestic violence, as well as those who have previously been victims of domestic violence.”
The women and children who come to the shelter, come with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Their children have nothing. The shelter has concrete needs for their clients should you be interested in contributing more than money. Though the money will help. Remember the words of Jesus: When you do it to the least of these… Certainly the women and children helped by SafeHaven qualify.
